About earwigs

Earwigs are slender, reddish-brown insects recognizable by their pincers (forceps) on the rear of their bodies. In Arizona, they often become a household nuisance during the warmer months, especially after rain or during irrigation, when the moist soil drives them indoors. Although they look intimidating, earwigs are not harmful to humans or pets and rarely use their pincers. They typically hide in dark, damp areas like under mulch, rocks, or leaf litter, and may enter homes through foundation cracks, doors, or windows in search of moisture and shelter.

Infestations are often triggered by excessive moisture, poor drainage, overwatering, or clutter around the home’s perimeter. To prevent earwigs, homeowners should reduce outdoor moisture, keep mulch and vegetation trimmed away from the foundation, and seal entry points. Inside the home, using a dehumidifier and keeping basements or bathrooms dry can help deter them. Pest control professionals can assist by applying perimeter treatments, identifying moisture issues, and recommending environmental changes to eliminate conducive conditions. Their intervention is especially useful when large populations develop in landscaping or crawl spaces.
