About Spiders

Spiders are a common household pest in Arizona, with several species frequently found in and around homes. While most spiders are harmless and even beneficial for controlling other insect populations, Arizona is home to a few medically significant species, such as the black widow and the brown recluse (or desert recluse). These spiders prefer undisturbed, dark areas like garages, basements, storage boxes, attics, and cluttered corners, and they tend to come indoors during hot or dry conditions.

Spider infestations are often caused by the availability of food (insects), shelter (clutter or unsealed spaces), and entry points like cracks in walls, foundations, or screens. To prevent spiders, homeowners should reduce indoor and outdoor clutter, regularly clean and vacuum rarely used spaces, seal cracks and crevices, and minimize outdoor lighting that attracts flying insects (spiders' prey).

Pest control professionals can help manage spider populations by identifying dangerous species, applying targeted treatments in nesting and hiding areas, and implementing integrated pest management (IPM) strategies to reduce both spiders and their insect food sources. For ongoing problems or sightings of venomous spiders, routine professional inspections and treatments are highly recommended.
